For those of you who are interested, here is a website which has the proceedings of the 1880 Milan conference, including the resolutions that were presented at the conference. Reading through the proceedings, one can see that the outcome was all but pushed through and foreordained — for example, they had demonstrations of oral skills, but refused to provide any information about the background of these students they were using as “examples”.

On one of my email listserves, Gardy Van Gils, a Deaf woman from Holland, sent this story of what happened in a meeting of Deaf and Hearing people in her workplace discussing how Deaf and Hearing can work together more effectively, when one woman stood up and said what was on her mind. Read the story in the link below to see what happened next. This story points to why it is useless to change what we call ourselves by, since Hearing people’s attitudes will still be of us as “disabled” people until we are able to get societal attitudes changed.

A friend just sent me a copy of the AGB Association’s publication, “Volta Voices” (July/Aug. 2008, p. 11 – 12) which has an article about their recent convention in Milwaukee and also mentions the DBC. With some people’s assertions that AGB has changed and they are not against ASL anymore in mind, I examined the article to see what it said about ASL, the Deaf Community, and the DBC. What I found are discussed here in this vlog. See also:
