Thanksgiving is a holiday that ultimately celebrates the colonization of the Americas by the British. However, colonization is a process which often does not have benefits for the colonized peoples. After reading a Newsweek article a while back, I realized that there are similarities to how the British colonized some peoples and how Hearing people colonized the Deaf.

In 1964, Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart famously said “I can’t define pornography, but I know it when I see it!” The discussion surrounding pornography has parallels in the current discussion regarding audism.

Dr. Larry Fleischer’s death has gotten me to thinking about our Deaf leaders and their dwindling numbers. At the same time, our community is trending towards not supporting our leaders, which is not good for us all. I offer a challenge to you: which type of leader will YOU follow?

I personally do not view Alan Hurwitz as a person who will create any real Deaf-centered change at Gallaudet, or in the Deaf community or outside of it. I suspect that we may never be able to have a real Deaf-centered President of Gallaudet, and I explain why here.
