Historic Parallels: AGB, DBC & ICED
I can’t afford to travel to Milwaukee for the DBC conference, but I wish them well in all they are doing. In the meantime, the recent news about AGB’s closing off the walkway between their hotel and the DBC’s reminds me of a similar action that was taken over 100 years ago. I look at the comparisons here and discuss the implications.

DBC’s Conference a success? Not quite. Media and the public did not seem to take off as DBC was hoping they would. Look no further than Milwaukee’s very own Journal. They published an article, which in my view generated negative publicity for DBC and ASL. Simply put, DBC got off on the wrong foot when it choose to butt heads with AG Bell. Why? Because AGB represent Oralism and Cochlear Implant movements. For DBC to butt head with AG Bell and say that we are only here to empower and advocate ASL without regards to Oralism and Cochlear Implant is playing naive and stupid because AGB represents Oralism and Cochlear Implant movement. It is little wonder why Milwaukee Journal compared AGB’s movement for technology versus DBC’s movement for ASL. Don’t want the comparision? Don’t butt heads with organization that represent Oralism & CI. If DBC had any brains at all they would begin an independent movement based on its own merits without picking a fight with the giant. It is sad how DBC choose to butt heads with AGB as if our metits could not stand on its own. Go figure. DBC recruited ASL powerhouses, who by nature hated Oralism & Cochlear Implants, therefore the decision to butt heads with AGB is not surprising. What we all thought was going to be a historic and break through movement evolved into a docile and fruitless movement due to lack for political and strategic plans. It’s a sad time for our Deaf Children.

The comparison between the Paris conference and current AGB convention regarding the treatment of Deaf people are very similar. When will the cycle be broken?
What is ICED?

Mishka,
ICED is the International Conference of Educators of the Deaf. The Milan conference of 1880 was the first meeting of this group, although the current ICED claims not to have been derived from this, although it was definitely a forerunner of the ICED.

This whole conference walkway being shut just because of DBC is made up.
At the HILTON walkway entrance there was a sign indicating the calendar for the entire month. The walkway is only open on days when there is an event in the convention center and then it is opened to the headquarters hotel. (I.e. you pay to rent the facilities, you can access it. It is not a public walkway.) Basically it saves on having to have security at all the entrances.
I took a picture of the calendar AND took a picture of my husband walking through the unlocked door to the HYATT. Even though the sign said “closed,” the doors were all unlocked.
